Vanessa Lann - Wereldpremière

One/Life for piano quintet is a new piece by Vanessa Lann. This work was commissioned for the closing concert of the Brundibár Arts Festival in Newcastle and Gateshead, UK. Launched in 2016, the annual Brundibár Arts Festival is the only recurring British festival dedicated to artists who were victims of the Holocaust. In addition to celebrating the work of those artists murdered or who perished, the Festival regularly commissions a new composition as a message of hope in times of adversity. This concert is dedicated to the memory of Hanni Begg (1929-2017) who was torn from home as a child but narrowly escaped deportation. She was the only family member to survive the war. Hanni was also a keen supporter of the Festival from its inception.

NEW CD - Elizabeth Vercoe

Elizabeth Vercoe has been hailed by the Washington Post as “one of the most inventive composers working in America today.” Lauded as “an exceptionally gifted composer with a fine technical command and a keen sensitivity to sound materials,” she has attended concerts of her music all over the world.
Her new album Butterfly Effects and other works comprises of two instrumental pieces and two song cycles - including Herstory I. composed in 1975, her first one in a dramatic series of song cycles on texts by women poets. Varying in instrumentation from solo voice to use of the complete trio of voice and instruments, the songs relate a woman's life experiences: finding freedom only in madness, coming to her child in the midst of a nightmare, growing older with her partner, expressing bitterness about aging, and dreaming at 80 of her youth. Stay tuned to Radio Monalisa in January to hear tracks from this new release.
